Abstract

Antimicrobial susceptibility of thermophilic Campylobacter spp., isolated from environmental samples, to heavy metals and detergents was evaluated in the present study. The antimicrobial susceptibility of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. viz., Camp. jejuni, Camp. coli and Camp. lari against heavy metals and detergents in term of minimal inhibitory concentration was assessed by E- test. The result obtained indicated that most of the heavy metals and detergents have an antimicrobial effect on the thermophilic Campylobacter spp. isolates, but minimal inhibitory concentrations of them were not similar. In general, the most Campylobacter strains were resistant to high concentration of molybdenum and the detergent Tween 80, while were sensitive to cadmium and cetrimide at less concentration. To interpret, it could be noted that flow of industrial sewage including different heavy metals and detergents into the environment reduces the population of thermophilic Campylobacter. Therefore, type of samples and sampling sites affect the isolation rate of thermophilic Campylobacter from environment.

Abstract

Twenty bacteriophages were isolated from Pavana river water and sewage samples in Pune. Out of all the isolates two bacteriophages were characterized and identified as coliphage (Leviviridae) and staphylophage (Podoviridae). The effect of ultraviolet light and environmental pollutants (detergents and heavy metals) was evaluated on survival of them. The results indicated that, coliphage was more resistant to ultraviolet light than that of staphylophage. Besides, the results obtained from effect of detergents on survival of isolates indicated that coliphage was relatively more resistant against all the detergents other than SDS, however, response of the isolates against SDS was identical. In addition, response of the isolates against heavy metals indicated that MPIC value of Cu was relatively high. While, MPICs of Cd and Hg were relatively low and the MPIC value of Zn for coliphages was high than for staphylophage. Therefore, based on foregoing evidence the present study interpreted that probably coliphage is relatively more resistant to radiation and environmental pollutants than staphylophage, which is related to their genome and structures.

Abstract

In the last two decades allergic infections have became more because of modernizations, change of life style and industrializations. It is reported that more than 9 million children under the age of 18 suffer from allergies and asthma. Belgaum is the district where humidity is quite high (20-50%).Mold is the commonest problem in rainy season. Mold spores may cause allergic reactions or asthma attacks in sensitive people. The study was conducted during 2006-2008in professional groups at Belgaum district, Karnataka. Professional groups included Computer Operators, Bank Employees and Lab-Technicians from Belgaum. Multimedia package-CD and reading material-Booklet were prepared after extensive references about allergy and Aspergillosis and it's preventions. Questionnaire was designed to assess the knowledge of respondents. Pretest questionnaire and after exposing the respondents to media post questionnaire were collected and analysed by statistical methods. It was observed that multimedia CD was found to be more efficient (20%-25%) and attractive in disseminating the knowledge regarding the Allergy and Aspergillosis.
